Offer expanded carrier screening through your lab

Genetic disease occurs in 1 of every 280 births in the US and yet only a small percentage of physicians offer expanded carrier screening regularly. ACOG has recommended that every pregnant woman be provided information about testing and that after counseling can decline any or all screening.  A 2012 ACOG survey found that only 15% of members regularly offered screening but that 52% offer screening when it is requested.

Expanding availability of testing can help Genetic counselors and physicians educate eligible patients to understand their risks and options.

For healthcare organizations already offering screening and counseling to parents, Translational Reports are a great way to standardize to a single format for ease of use.
